Field notes — 36.6° N
Almost all of the gold leaf made in Japan is beaten in Kanazawa, to about one ten-thousandth of a millimetre. Held up to the light, it lets a bluish glow through.
On the east bank of the Asano river, the teahouse quarter of Higashi Chaya was opened with the licence of the Kaga domain in 1820. Its fronts are lined with kimusuko, fine wooden lattices: from inside you can see the street, from the street you cannot see in.
In late November the rain here comes and goes in short, cold showers. They call it shigure.
