Field notes — 57.9° N
Fårö lies off the northern tip of Gotland. A free car ferry crosses the sound in about six minutes.
Along the shore stand the raukar, pillars of limestone. They are the cores of coral reefs that grew in a warm Silurian sea, more than four hundred million years ago. After the ice age the land rose, the waves cut away the softer rock, and the pillars stayed.
In November the light is short. By half past four, the fishermen’s huts on the shingle are dark.
