Field notes — 48.2° N
The two pavilions on Karlsplatz were built in 1898–99 by Otto Wagner as entrances to the city railway: green iron, marble panels and gold sunflowers. When the U-Bahn was dug beneath them they were taken down, and in 1977 they were put back, about one and a half metres higher.
Wagner's Postal Savings Bank, begun in 1904, is faced with thin plates of marble, held by rows of bolts with aluminium heads.
Off Kärntner Strasse, Adolf Loos fitted out a bar of about 27 square metres in 1908. Onyx above the door glows the colour of honey, and mirrors on the walls make the room look larger.
